Yahoo and AOL: the technology rust belt

Yahoo and AOL are talking merger:  two weak companies, hoping that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.  And they could be right, with the enhanced advertising capability.  I was one of the original AOL users–in fact my password is only four digits–which tells you how long ago that is.  A colleague ribbed me mercilessly when I switched to other email addresses/hosts, saying Steve Case would be personally disappointed.

It’s sad to see Yahoo is too great a challenge for Carol Bartz to turn around.  They probably need to make radical Bet-the-Farm bets, which is always difficult for management and the board to stomach. . .  Better off dead or alive?
